Foreword
This work reports on the performances of ohmic contacts fabricated on highly p-type doped 4H-SiC epitaxial layer selectively grown by vapor-liquid-solid transport. Due to the very high doping level obtained, the contacts have an ohmic behavior even without any annealing process. Upon variation of annealing temperatures, it was shown that both 500 and 800 °C annealing temperature lead to a minimum value of the Specific Contact Resistance (SCR) down to 1.3×10−6 Ω⋅cm2. However, a large variation of the minimum SCR values has been observed (up to 4×10−4 Ω⋅cm2). Possible sources of this fluctuation have been also discussed in this paper
Diffusion-limited loop formation of semiflexible polymers: Kramers theory and the intertwined time scales of chain relaxation and closing
We show that Kramers rate theory gives a straightforward, accurate estimate
of the closing time of a semiflexible polymer that is valid in cases
of physical interest. The calculation also reveals how the time scales of chain
relaxation and closing are intertwined, illuminating an apparent conflict
between two ways of calculating in the flexible limit.Comment: Europhys. Lett., 2003 (in press). 8 pages, 3 figures. See also,

Occupational choice, number of entrepreneurs and output: theory and empirical evidence with Spanish data
This paper extends the (Lucas, Bell J Econ 9:508–523,1978) model of occupational choices by individuals with different skills, beyond the simple options of self-employment or wage-employment, by including a second choice for the self-employed. That is, an option to hire employees and so become self-employed with employees (SEWEs), or to be self-employed without employees (SEWNEs). We solve for the market equilibrium and examine the sensitivity of relative sizes of occupational groups, and of the level of productivity, to changes in the exogenous parameters. The results show that the positive (negative) association between number of SEWEs (SEWNEs) and productivity, observed in the Spanish data, can be explained, under certain conditions, as the result of cross-region and time differences in average skills. These findings point to the importance of distinguishing between SEWEs and SEWNEs in drawing valid conclusions concerning any link between entrepreneurship and economic development
Quantum Shock Waves - the case for non-linear effects in dynamics of electronic liquids
Using the Calogero model as an example, we show that the transport in
interacting non-dissipative electronic systems is essentially non-linear.
Non-linear effects are due to the curvature of the electronic spectrum near the
Fermi energy. As is typical for non-linear systems, propagating wave packets
are unstable. At finite time shock wave singularities develop, the wave packet
collapses, and oscillatory features arise. They evolve into regularly
structured localized pulses carrying a fractionally quantized charge - {\it
soliton trains}. We briefly discuss perspectives of observation of Quantum
Shock Waves in edge states of Fractional Quantum Hall Effect and a direct
measurement of the fractional charge
Riociguat for the treatment of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.
BACKGROUND: Riociguat, a member of a new class of compounds (soluble guanylate cyclase stimulators), has been shown in previous clinical studies to be beneficial in the treatment of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. METHODS: In this phase 3, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, we randomly assigned 261 patients with inoperable chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension or persistent or recurrent pulmonary hypertension after pulmonary endarterectomy to receive placebo or riociguat. The primary end point was the change from baseline to the end of week 16 in the distance walked in 6 minutes. Secondary end points included changes from baseline in pulmonary vascular resistance, N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) level, World Health Organization (WHO) functional class, time to clinical worsening, Borg dyspnea score, quality-of-life variables, and safety. RESULTS: By week 16, the 6-minute walk distance had increased by a mean of 39 m in the riociguat group, as compared with a mean decrease of 6 m in the placebo group (least-squares mean difference, 46 m; 95% confidence interval [CI], 25 to 67; P<0.001). Pulmonary vascular resistance decreased by 226 dyn · sec · cm-5in the riociguat group and increased by 23 dyn · sec · cm-5in the placebo group (least-squares mean difference, -246 dyn · sec · cm-5; 95% CI, -303 to -190; P<0.001). Riociguat was also associated with significant improvements in the NT-proBNP level (P<0.001) and WHO functional class (P = 0.003). The most common serious adverse events were right ventricular failure (in 3% of patients in each group) and syncope (in 2% of the riociguat group and in 3% of the placebo group). CONCLUSIONS: Riociguat significantly improved exercise capacity and pulmonary vascular resistance in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. Particle Dynamics in a Mass-Conserving Coalescence Process
We consider a fully asymmetric one-dimensional model with mass-conserving
coalescence. Particles of unit mass enter at one edge of the chain and
coalescence while performing a biased random walk towards the other edge where
they exit. The conserved particle mass acts as a passive scalar in the reaction
process , and allows an exact mapping to a restricted ballistic
surface deposition model for which exact results exist. In particular, the
mass- mass correlation function is exactly known. These results complement
earlier exact results for the process without mass. We introduce a
comprehensive scaling theory for this process. The exact anaytical and
numerical results confirm its validity.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
Dynamics of fully coupled rotators with unimodal and bimodal frequency distribution
We analyze the synchronization transition of a globally coupled network of N
phase oscillators with inertia (rotators) whose natural frequencies are
unimodally or bimodally distributed. In the unimodal case, the system exhibits
a discontinuous hysteretic transition from an incoherent to a partially
synchronized (PS) state. For sufficiently large inertia, the system reveals the
coexistence of a PS state and of a standing wave (SW) solution. In the bimodal
case, the hysteretic synchronization transition involves several states.
Namely, the system becomes coherent passing through traveling waves (TWs), SWs
and finally arriving to a PS regime. The transition to the PS state from the SW
occurs always at the same coupling, independently of the system size, while its
value increases linearly with the inertia. On the other hand the critical
coupling required to observe TWs and SWs increases with N suggesting that in
the thermodynamic limit the transition from incoherence to PS will occur
without any intermediate states. Finally a linear stability analysis reveals
that the system is hysteretic not only at the level of macroscopic indicators,
but also microscopically as verified by measuring the maximal Lyapunov
exponent.Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures, contribution for the book: Control of
